UC President Mark G. Yudof recommende Desmond-Hellmann for the top job after a searc process that formally begabnin December. If approved by the UC Board of Regent in a meetingnext week, Desmond-Hellmann, 51, woulde be the first woman chancellor and the first with a for-profirt pedigree. Desmond-Hellmann is a 14-yeafr veteran of South San Francisco-basedf biotech powerhouse Genentech, most recently as presidengt ofproduct development. She left that post Thursday, little more than a monthb after Swiss drugmaker completedeits $47 billion acquisition of Genentech. Desmond-Hellman would replace Dr. J.
Michael Bishop, who is steppinv down June 30 after more than 11 yearsin UCSF’s top Desmond-Hellmann will manage an institution with a 2008-09 budgert of $2.5 billion and a staff of more than 21,500. It is the second-largest winnert of funding. It has 2,951 graduate studentzs in life sciences. At Genentech, Desmond-Hellmann has been a clinica scientist, chief medical executive vice presidentand president, overseeing trials for drugd like the cancer fighters Herceptin, Avastin and Genentech, which has research agreements with UCSF, has more than 11,000p employees. Desmond-Hellman had total compensation $8.4 million in the most recent available year. Her base salaryu was $664,833.
